India is grieving the passing away of Bharat Ratna, Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee who passed away in Delhi on August 31. He died due to coronavirus complications. He was 84. A statesman par excellence, Dr. Mukherjee was widely respected across the party spectrum for his contribution to Indian politics.
He was awakened Bharat Ratna in August 2019. The Centre has announced seven days of national mourning for the former President.
Dr. Mukherjee had been in a coma after brain surgery earlier in August. He had also tested positive for Covid-19 in the hospital. His son Abhijit Mukherjee announced his death on Twitter. He is survived by his daughter Sharmishtha, sons Abhijit and Indrajit. He will be cremated on September 1.
Pranab Mukherjee has served as Defence, Finance and External Affairs Minister in several governments before taking the country’s highest post. He served as the President of India from 2012-2017.
Born on December 11, 1935, in a small village in Mirati in West Bengal, he started his career as a college teacher and journalist. He rose to ranks under Prime Ministership of Mrs Indira Gandhi becoming her closest lieutenants. After being sidelined by Rajiv Gandhi, In 1989 he had formed his own part Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress but later merged it with Congress after failing to garner support in his home state, West Bengal.
