World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5. It calls for engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue. This year the theme is Biodiversity that demonstrates the interdependence of humans and the webs of life, in which they exist. Biodiversity affects every life on earth. Maintaining a proper balance between humans and other species protect us from pandemics as high diversity of species reduce the risk of diseases.
Union Minister of Environment, Prakash Javadekar launched Urban Forest Programme in 200 cities across India. He said “ We have forests in rural areas but not in urban areas. We have to create forests so we have launched this program. He further added “India has 16% of the human population of the world, we have only 2.5% of the world’s landmass and 4% of natural water resources. India has been able to preserve 8% of the world’s biodiversity and this is no small feat.”
Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth. Biodiversity comprises of every species on earth including forest, coral reefs, and all other species. The emergence of Coronavirus has reassured the fact that when we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that supports human life. (ANI)
